Growing up, both of my parents loved to cook. My dad and I built a large brick BBQ pit in our backyard in Houston, where we spent countless weekends smoking meats and bringing the community together. These gatherings weren't just about food—they were about family, friends, and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Those early experiences instilled in me a deep passion for BBQ. I learned that great BBQ brings people together and creates moments of joy and connection.

In 1995, my friend Leon challenged me to create a rub that would stand out from everything else on the market. Along with my son Blake, we embarked on a journey to develop the perfect BBQ rub.

We established seven criteria that our rub had to meet:

  1. Exceptional Flavor: It had to taste amazing and enhance the natural flavors of the meat
  2. Versatility: It needed to work on all types of meat—beef, pork, chicken, and more
  3. Ease of Use: Simple enough for beginners, sophisticated enough for experts
  4. Quality Ingredients: Only all-natural, premium ingredients—no shortcuts
  5. Cost-Effective: Affordable for everyday use, not just special occasions
  6. Adaptability: It had to work in a pit, crock-pot, oven, or rotisserie—any cooking method
  7. Simplicity: No overnight marinating or complicated prep required

These seven criteria became the foundation of everything we do.

We opened a booth at the Houston Rodeo BBQ Cook-off, where we served over 1,000 people daily. This gave us invaluable feedback and allowed us to refine our recipe based on real customer reactions.

For three years, we tested, tweaked, and perfected our formula. By 1998, we knew we had something special—a rub that consistently delivered championship results and earned rave reviews from both novice cooks and BBQ veterans.

In February 1998, we officially founded Real Texas BBQ Rub, Inc. What started as a family challenge had evolved into a business dedicated to helping people create exceptional BBQ with confidence and ease.

Our commitment has always been to honor the Texas BBQ tradition while making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their skill level or equipment.
